Lionel Messi Has Won the Ballon d’Or Seven Times
The star striker of the Argentine national team and the French team Paris Saint-Germain Lionel Messi again won the Ballon d’Or award. Already seven times during his career, the footballer received the title of the record holder. The last times the athlete won the label were in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019. Messi also had every chance of becoming the champion in 2020, but the awards ceremony was canceled due to the threat of covid-19.
This time, the only serious competitor for Messi was the forward of Munich Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski. Many experts predicted that the athlete from Poland would become the winner, but the final points were not enough. The difference between the players was only 33 points.
The best football players and goalkeepers were also awarded at the ceremony. Alexia Putellas, the attacking midfielder of Spanish Barcelona, became the owner of the women’s golden ball. Also, the organizers highlighted the name of Gigi Donnarumma, who became the best goalkeeper in the world, playing at PSG.
In addition to all the awards already listed, France Football magazine presented the world with two more prestigious nominations – “Striker of the Year” and “Club of the Year”. Although Robert Lewandowski did not receive the Ballon d’Or, he was recognized as the top scorer.
